Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is RabbitVCS? RabbitVCS is a project with the goal of developing a collection of utilities to allow for better client integration with some of the popular version control systems. Currently, we only support the Nautilus file manager and the Subversion version control system.

What does the VCS stand for? Version Control System. This is a program like Subversion, Git, or Mercurial which allows one or many developers to maintain control over their source code.

Where can I get RabbitVCS? Please go to our Downloads section.

I would like to contribute to RabbitVCS, but I'm not sure where to start. Please go to our Contribute section.

When do you plan to support other VCS', like GIT? Version 0.14 is our milestone release for supporting other VCS' which has already been released and adds support for Git.

Can RabbitVCS replace everything I do from the command line? Possibly, but then again, possibly not :) RabbitVCS covers most of the ordinary usage of SVN, so if your workflow is not too esoteric then it's unlikely you'll need to use the command line. On the other hand, if you're doing something that is complicated or that requires a lot of manual intervention, you will certainly need to know how to use the SVN command line client.

How can I uninstall RabbitVCS when I did a manual installation? Please see the instructions here.

I have installed RabbitVCS, but I don't see any context menu items or emblems!

Try the following steps to troubleshoot common issues:

  • Make sure you have installed the latest version installed (see below).
  • Restart your file manager (the easiest way to do this is to log out and log back in).
  • Make sure that your system meets the minimum requirements
  • Check the list of known issues for possible problems.
    • If the context menu items are showing up but not the emblems or icons, then you may need to update your icon cache via the command: “gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor” as root.

How can I install the latest version? If your distribution includes an old version, see the download page for instructions.

I'm running a 64 bit distribution and RabbitVCS doesn't work! See our known issues page for an explanation and workaround.
